The need
Growing Need to raise Reading Abilities
In every country, there is a growing need to read, yet people throughout the world suffer from information overload and poor literacy standards. They have no idea of their reading performance rates and of their latent potential for improvement.
This is mainly caused by historic use of the phonetic system of teaching people to read, which causes sub-vocalisation, reading one word at a time and voluntary or involuntary regression, that is, going back over the material.
The aim of ProRead is to considerably increase participant's Effective Reading Rate (ERR).
The course is suitable for all business and professional people, as well as students from the age of 14 years. It is normally conducted over 12 hours (4 x 3 hr sessions, usually once per week for 4 weeks) and is run on an "in-house" basis conducted in school or company premises by qualified, local bilingual teachers who conduct the course in English or where offered in your native language.
It is a fact that most people do not have any idea of their reading performance levels
Some people think that they are slow readers others may think that they read very well, however they don't really know. There is no general awareness of individual reading rates and comprehension standards of performance.
Because of the fact that formal tuition in reading is not carried on after the age of seven years when children have been taught to read to a certain standard and from then on practice the methods which they were taught, habitually applying the poor habits of:
- Reading one word at a time
- Sub-vocalizing, sounding the words physically or mentally
to themselves - Regressing in a voluntary or involuntary manner, and going
back over words or paragraphs, sometimes whole pages
These poor reading habits cause people to read clumsily and usually far below the standard that they could and should read.
The need to read well with high comprehension and no fatigue, is most necessary in order to :
- Gain knowledge
- Learn from written material
- Pass exams at all levels
- Communicate
- Process written information and instructions effectively
- Read for pleasure, enjoyment and personal satisfaction
- To be well informed in a world of high technology and
computerisation and keep up to date - To become successful and compete in commercial and
professional careers - To save time and energy
The need to read more effectively from computer screens is becoming more obvious to Education institutes and Commercial and professional Organisations who have spent fortunes on equipment and now realise that it is not being used as well as it should and could be. There is also a greater awareness of the need for people to read as it is becoming the commercial and professional language in most countries throughout the world.
